Formal Certification of Shovel-Ready Site Enhances Red Wing's Economic Prospects

7 Feb 2012

Shovel-ready sites position Minnesota communities as extremely attractive to businesses and new development projects because they reduce the time, expense, unpredictability and risk of development. Certification means the planning, zoning, environmental studies, title work, public infrastructure and other pre-construction activities are complete. This is especially appealing to new and expanding business because today's fast-paced market often forces immediate start-up. With shovel-ready sites, company development, job creation, and product delivery happens almost instantly.

The certification also gives the community a competitive edge. Shovel-ready sites will be heavily marketed nation-wide and establishes Minnesota communities as progressive, business-oriented and prepared for new development. Shari Chorney, business development director at the Red Wing Port Authority, acknowledges the boon the certification will give the community. "The Port Authority is excited about the ability to market directly to site selectors. Red Wing is looking forward to the increased traffic that a shovel-ready site will provide."
