The Red Wing school district will hire its first Indian Education director to oversee the program, as well as develop curriculum that meets the state’s Indigenous Education for All requirement.
The Red Wing School Board unanimously approved the new position March 11. The person hired for the position is expected to start July 1.
Following the vote, School Board Member Nicky Buck put her head in her hands, overcome with emotion and wiping away tears. Members of the district’s American Indian Parent Advisory Committee (AIPAC) took a photo with the school board while applauding and cheering.
