Mid-Year 2019 – Building Construction Activity
Through the second quarter of 2019 (6 months), the City of Red Wing’s building construction activity is ahead of the same 6-month time period in 2018, and examples of construction activity follows:
- Total permit valuation in 2019 = $24.3 million compared to $20.3 million in 2018.
- Total residential valuation in 2019 = $13.8 million compared to $7.2 million in 2018.
- Total commercial/industrial valuation in 2019 = $4.5 million compared to $4.3 million in 2018.
- Total new construction valuation in 2019 = $11.5 million compared to $7.7 million in 2018.
Anytime Fitness (1105 Bench Street). Red Wing Construction began a new 6,040 sq. ft. single story building for the local fitness franchise, which will be located on Highway 1 just south of Tyler Road.
St. James Hotel (406 Main Street). This historic hotel is continuing renovations to include the Port Room; located in the basement, this space will host weddings and special events for groups of 80 to 150 people.
Keller-Baartman Apartments. This new 108-unit residential project is underway near the Mayo Hospital on Hewitt Avenue, which should be open in late 2020

Red Wing was featured in the August 2019 issue of the Twin Cities Business magazine; the article is titled “The Turning Tides of Red Wing. The Old, Established River City is Crafting a Future While Maintaining Historic Traditions”. The article features many businesses in Red Wing, including Red Wing Grain, SCS Elevator, Food Service Specialties, 3M Fall Protection, Red Wing Shoes, Nanocore, Treasure Island Resort & Casino, and Red Wing Stoneware & Pottery. The article also provides information about various economic development partners here, including the Chamber of Commerce, Port Authority, Red Wing Ignite, and Minnesota State College Southeast.
