Support Local Businesses and Charities in Red Wing this Small Business Saturday and Giving Tuesday
Call one, call all! This Small Business Saturday and Giving Tuesday, the Red Wing Port Authority team would like to thank all of the small businesses and nonprofits in Red Wing, MN, for the joy and pride they bring to residents and their profound effect on the local economy. Small Business Saturday (November 25) and Giving Tuesday (November 28) offer a time to celebrate these entities and the incredible benefits they provide to the community.
Small Business Saturday
Small Business Saturday takes place annually on the Saturday after Thanksgiving and offers people the opportunity to thank their community and support local businesses. American Express founded Small Business Saturday in 2010 to encourage consumers to shop small during the holiday season. The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) has cosponsored the celebration since 2011, which has grown into a movement supporting the small business community.
The results of Small Business Saturday are staggering. In November of last year, American Express reported the results of its 2022 Small Business Saturday Consumer Insights Survey. The study found that Small Business Saturday drove approximately $17.9 billion in sales in 2022 and that $0.68 of every dollar spent at a U.S. small business stays within the local area. Not only do small businesses serve as the foundation for local economies, but they also generated 63 percent of new jobs from 1995 to 2021.
This year, Small Business Saturday falls on November 25, and the hope is that residents of Red Wing consider showing their support and shopping local! Take this opportunity to treat yourself to some of your favorite local mom-and-pop shops, independent retailers, restaurants, cafes and service providers while giving back at the same time.
The Red Wing Port Authority has numerous resources and affiliations with area organizations supporting small businesses and entrepreneurs. The list includes:
- The Red Wing Area Chamber engages, supports and strengthens area businesses to advance the community’s vitality. It also ensures the Red Wing area is a desirable place to work and live by fostering a climate of business excellence.
- Red Wing Innovation Incubator is a coworking platform focusing on artists, the arts community and small arts/cultural organizations interested or engaged in community development of the local creative and entrepreneurial economy.
- Red Wing Downtown Mainstreet is a nonprofit organization reflecting the interests of the Red Wing community through the promotion, preservation and development of the downtown district.
Giving Tuesday
Giving Tuesday was launched in 2012 to inspire people to do good and give back in communities across the world. It is now celebrated annually on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, and this year falls on November 28. Like Small Business Saturday, it has become a movement promoting generosity and collaboration with nonprofits and charities everywhere.
Last year, GivingTuesday raised $3.1 billion in one day for charitable causes nationwide. The nonprofit sector is the third largest employer in the U.S., providing approximately 12.3 million jobs according to the most recent data from 2016.
Nonprofits and charities in Red Wing continue to make a positive difference by helping children, animals, the underprivileged, the environment, and more. We at the Red Wing Port Authority hope that Red Wing community members will consider making a monetary donation or volunteering to the organizations that call Red Wing home.
